Why this petition matters

Started by Concerned Citizen

Our Supermarkets offer an array of unhealthy food choices, yet the choice to buy eco-friendly is not as accessible and improved as it should be! Supermarkets and large entities play a significant role in the world's crisis with waste, this petition is to try enforce greater responsibility to those enterprises to provide 'options' and carry the environmental costs.

Lets focus on Supermarkets: Supermarkets are able to control their supply and; therefore, our consumption making supermarkets powerful with regard to their capacity (and power) in changing attitudes from the beginning stages of production to point of purchase. Supermarkets have a larger capacity to control the market and help -more than any individual or entity can-to create a pave-way towards a sustainable future. People care about the environment yet control, accessibility, and the know-how contribute to the slow and gradual action taken by our developed 'modern' societies affecting our world and future generations. You have to be a strong willed, creative, inquisitive intellect/environmentalist in order to fight war on waste, (with time on your hands) and I believe society should provide better to the majority. Supermarkets are able to curb what we consume and how we consume.

How many unnecessary products are packaged in plastic or other? Our fruits and vegetables are bought pre-packaged in plastic and/or are put into plastic for weighing. Products that can be made by ourselves or in speciality shops are packaged in plastic like biscuits, chocolate, cheese, yoghurt, dips, and ready made meals. The surplus supermarkets produce are; in addition, packaged in plastic, paper, glass...waste! The scale of which IS recyclable has yet to be released in some form. Oils, coffee, rice, nuts, spices etc are all packaged instead of being loose and refillable. Toys/clothes, tupperware.... Supermarkets should carry the cost over consumers for the waste they stock before consumption (as should any large entity within other industries overproducing or oversupplying). Momentarily companies are not burdened with the environmental cost. If supermarkets reduced the supply of our 'wanted' goods over our 'needed' goods, variety and quality will, I believe, increase. Specialty shops won't be a thing of the past and could offer the quick fix to our busy lives we look for in a supermarket. Should more local produce, and businesses have more demand, perhaps too will the sense of community and culture. Supermarkets can still prosper and yet provide a platform and/or incentive for locals such as chocolatiers, vintners etc. Supermarkets could allocate space for locals to compete for the supply of their products vs packaged products from abroad. Large enterprises have taken over small businesses reducing the quality in product and the skills we pass on to our next generation. Mass production causes a surplus that we are littering into the world and if we cannot control waste today then the scale of waste in the future will be un-imaginable. We cannot fight nature and think technology can save clean air, and clean water. I cannot imagine what the world could look like as a result of modernisation if social structure does not dramatically change. We are in extreme terms, in par with the language and tone of our time, 'terrorising our planet.'
