There will come a day when same sex couples on TV go unnoticed. However, today, these relationships are still used as titillating drama to improve ratings without consideration for proper representation. Australian television, in particular, has had a less than positive LGBTQ+ image over the years in their soaps, with female same sex relationships being very poorly portrayed. As can often be seen over the media, and felt in LGBTQ+ people’s everyday lives, homophobia is still rife and shows that there is such a need for not just token same sex representation but for a kind of portrayal that includes couples who spark with chemistry and characters with substance that go beyond stereotypes.

In 2018, this misrepresentation felt as if it was going to change in Neighbours, Australia’s longest running drama series. The bisexual character of Chloe Brennan (April Rose Pengilly) was introduced and soon fell in love with Elly Conway (Jodi Anasta), her best friend and brother’s girlfriend. This relationship gave rise in social media to the ship known as Chelly and made it look like a positive representation for a same sex female couple was in the works. But, one year later, we see that Neighbours only intended Chelly to be an unrequited secondary love story. It seems they could never have anticipated the natural connection and magical chemistry between the actresses. This also led to the unexpected warm response of a new substantial worldwide audience.

The show itself has benefited greatly from this increased international response. This has been shown by higher ratings in episodes surrounding the Chelly storyline in both Neighbours’ home of Australia and in the United Kingdom, where it has its highest viewership. The episode following Chloe and Elly’s main date, airing in August 2019, helped Neighbours rank 12th in the Australian top 20 programs in the 5-city metro market. Even being ranked at all in the top 20 is something that Neighbours rarely manages to do these days. There is no doubt Chelly represents a phenomenal international platform for the show and its cast, via the shippers’ active participation in social media and video channels, such as YouTube, where hundreds of Chelly fan videos have received thousands of views from subscribers all over the world:

This highlights how popular Chelly is and how Neighbours could well take advantage of this movement originated from the special connection that exists between the actresses and the magnetic result of their work together. Their energy when opposite one another is simply electric. The actresses themselves support this ship:

  • April Pengilly suggested Chelly after reading Chloe’s first flirty scenes when she met Elly.
  • Jodi Anasta in a recent interview in Inside Soap magazine Yearbook is quoted as saying: ‘I keep going to the producer and saying, “Please can we put them together forever? We want a big white wedding!”’

Due to all the reasons above, we set up this petition to ask for your support for Chelly to be brought back in a meaningful way and without an expiration date. Nowadays, TV and media have an enormous power in contributing to the education of a society where positive LGBTQ+ representation is still very much required. Therefore, we would like Neighbours to take a proactive stand on this issue and approach it naturally, with respect and getting rid of rusty derogative labels (just as they wonderfully did in the August date) by incorporating Chloe and Elly’s story into the domestic lives of the residents of Ramsay Street. This naturalness would mean a lot to many people who, still today, struggle very hard to fit in this world.

If you support this petition, we would be very grateful if you please sign it and share it with as many people as you can.
