Ban Plastic Microbeads
Ban Plastic Microbeads
Why this petition matters
A single bottle of facial scrub can contain up to 300,000 microbeads. Microbeads are small plastic pieces commonly found in beauty and hygiene products. Due to its size, microbeads are too small to filter and can enter rivers, lakes, and oceans through drainage systems. Once in the ocean, the microbead's composition enables the beads to absorb toxins and transfer up the marine food chain. A single plastic microbead can be one million times more toxic than the water around it. Some countries have banned plastic microbeads including Canada, United Kingdom, France, and Taiwan. The United States have banned the microbeads under the Obama administration. However, many companies and industries still utilize the beads in detergents and beauty products that stay on the skin. Through this petition, we hope to push the United States to develop better guidelines for the development and distribution of microbeads. In addition, we hope that other countries will take the initiative and ban the plastic microbeads in products. Together, we can save the planet, one bead at a time.
