Why this petition matters

Started by James Baker

As gypsys we are treated as a community that is not equal to everyone else. We are descrimanated against i.e shops, restaurants and pubs can still put signs in there windows saying no gypsys/travellers allowed. We have derogatory words said to us, we get spat on, and are called racial slurs that if was put to another effnic minority would be classed as racism but the police say it’s not a racist crime, that in England and Wales it is a public order offence.

We can prevent a substantial number of our community suicides by making a change and not being afraid of being  descriminated against by going outside of our community to get jobs and not feel scared or trapped to do so.

Despatches aired a show on channel 4 on the 16/04/2020 showing only the bad of the community not showing any of what is good about gypsy/travellers. We have public figures in our community that work hard to bring awareness of the discrimination that we face. We also donate to food banks regularly and raise money for people in need, this is all in public interest but they fail to show or speak about these things when reporting about the gypsy/traveller community.

We only want to be equal and recognised as everybody else is. There is good and bad in every community and the bad should be punished. Not everyone should have to be penalised for the small number of gypsy/traveller offenders that shine a bad light on the morjority that are good. So I’m asking everyone who agree’s with this petition to get behind our community and let’s make a change for our generation and ones to come. Everything starts with one stand we have to make a change to stop the rascal bullying against us, our children and there’s to come
