Coronavirus price-gouging on eBay
Coronavirus price-gouging on eBay
Why this petition matters
On eBay, massive price-gouging is taking place on essentials needed to help fight the COVID-19 novel coronavirus that is sweeping the world.
Vast numbers of opportunistic sellers are scooping up mass quantities of items like face masks and hand sanitizer, then reselling on eBay for 5-10x profit. These are urgently-needed supplies that are no longer available locally in many places, in part due to these eBay opportunists.
This is not sustainable; our local stores simply cannot catch up on inventory for the general public when re-sellers are buying en masse.
eBay does in fact have a policy in place that prohibits this, but it doesn't seem to be well-enforced, as evidenced by the thousands of available items being offered for sale at absurd prices. Meanwhile, eBay collects approximately 10% of each sale.
For perspective, eBay's fee alone is often nearly as much as the retail value of the product being sold. For example, some sellers are selling $5 bottles of hand sanitizer (32oz) for $30 or more. On such sales, eBay takes approximately $3. As a result, eBay is profiting massively on this practice which is putting our communities at a higher risk.
We demand that eBay takes meaningful steps to strongly correct this issue immediately!
