Premier League cancel the season rather than play in empty stadiums
Premier League cancel the season rather than play in empty stadiums
Why this petition matters
It has been suggested that if the coronavirus situation worsens then the English football season should be completed by playing matches in empty stadiums.
This is inherently unfair. All teams have, by this stage in the season, played each other at least once. Therefore, those matches completed will have seen the home team have the advantage of having their home support behind them. When the reverse is true, home advantage is denied to the team in matches yet to be played. It isn't a level playing field. For example, Southampton and Norwich are 2 of the teams fighting relegation. They have already played the fixture at Southampton, where as the home club Southampton had the advantage of their home support. They're due to play each other again on 14/03/20 at Carrow Rd Norwich - a closed stadium would mean that Norwich City would be placed at a considerable disadvantage in respect to the match that took place earlier in the season.
The only fair solution, should the coronavirus situation worsen, would be to cancel the season, clear the records of games played and start again in August, provided the situation with coronavirus had improved at that point.
