Why this petition matters
Dear Hamden 2019 Mayoral Candidates,
Hamden CT (population over 60,000) has never had an animal shelter. We have rented space at the North Haven facility since 2005 at an approximate cost of $70 per day. ($10/dog, per day, for 7 allocated cages.) That agreement ended on May 1st of this year. Space is now located anywhere - whenever the need arises, including the backrooms of area animal hospitals. Rental costs at an animal hospital averages about $30/dog, per day, for 1 cage. Time will tell if the backrooms at animal hospitals are conducive to finding “forever homes” or if rental costs to taxpayers will keep accruing. In the meantime animal abandonment in the area is on the rise.
We understand that this situation has been passed down over several administrations. However by rejecting former Chief Wydra’s 2018 proposal, for a 15-cage Hamden wing at the new Regional Animal Shelter, we feel that the Mayor’s office now owns this problem. Realizing that grant writing to corporations (like the Petco Foundation) is futile until a location and price tag are known, the undersigned are looking for your suggestions for a site to become the future home of a Hamden Animal Shelter.
