Why this petition matters

Started by Patrick Cherney

Hundreds of thousands of people have a keen interest in the health of the deer herd in Kansas for various reasons. The general consensus is that the quality of deer hunting in Kansas is declining. Several contributing factors have led to this decline in deer hunting quality. However, the practice of baiting has been more detrimental than all others and is likely the root cause for this decline. Biologists largely agree that baiting increases the spread of CWD. CWD is a contagious neurological disease that is spreading in some (Kansas included) states around the country. Baiting also lead to a reduction in the trophy quality of the herd, therefore the demand for deer hunting in Kansas is likely to decline as a result. Lastly, the use of baiting has contributed to an increase in non-resident deer hunters and a decrease in the number of residents (especially younger Kansans) who hunt. If you care deeply about the future of deer hunting in Kansas please sign this petition to bring attention to this topic so KDWPT biologists have the ammunition they need to get a baiting ban enacted by the legislators in Topeka. The hunting experience will not be negatively effected, trophy numbers will improve, and resident hunters will likely regain interest.
