Why this petition matters

Started by Ashley Rhee

KatyISD is in the top 1% of all school districts in the United States and fosters an incredible, diverse community. However, as recent events stimulate hate into our district, we as a community need to come together and take action against these injustices.

We continue to watch the pain of minorities experiencing oppression and racism but have yet to provide a diverse and comprehensive solution to address the root cause: a lack of education. Our current eurocentric curriculum needs to be reformed to one that accurately represents the perspectives, stories, and history of minority races, sexualities, and religions.

Additionally, we currently do not have an official hate speech policy, and while KatyISD district engages our community in conversation, it has not been proactive enough to eradicate this source of hate. Our district has continued to allow blatant hate speech that targets and harms our minority students for too long; we call for the school board to adopt a hate speech policy as soon as possible.

While we understand that the district is meeting the challenge of how to safely return to in person instruction, it is not an excuse to turn back on progress. In order to return to school safely, the district must meet the moment and address the two viruses damaging our community: COVID-19 and racism.

Change starts here in our own community and we ask you to join us by signing this petition and asking your friends and family to do so as well. By signing this, you are supporting our efforts to diversify our curriculum and implement a zero tolerance policy against hate speech. Help us hold our district to a higher standard and create a safer community for us all.
