We would like Dorset Council to declare a Climate Emergency

The IPCC’s Special Report on Global Warming, published in October 2018, describes the enormous harm that a 2°C temperature rise is likely to cause compared to a 1.5°C rise. It states that limiting Global Warming to 1.5°C may still be possible with ambitious action from authorities, but we only have 11 years (to 2030) to achieve this.

Councils around the world are responding by declaring a ‘Climate Emergency’ and committing resources to address it.

This petition asks that Dorset Council commits to:

  1. Debating a climate emergency motion at full council
  2. Pledging to make Dorset carbon neutral by 2030
  3. Calling on Westminster to provide the powers and resources to make this target achievable
  4. Working with other local authorities on methods to limit Global Warming

At the time of writing (April 2019) there have been 58 Climate Emergency declarations by 1st and 2nd tier councils in the UK.

Nearby councils who have already responded and declared a Climate Emergency include: Somerset County Council, Somerset West and Taunton, Wiltshire Council, Mendip District County, Devon Council, Cornwall Council, Bath and North East Somerset, Plymouth City, Bristol City and so and on.
