Reinstate Seattle Pacific Women’s Gymnastics
Why this petition matters
From the Seattle Pacific University Women’s Gymnastics website: “SEATTLE -- The Seattle Pacific University athletic department will discontinue its women's gymnastics program effective immediately, Athletic Director Jackson Stava announces Monday.”
“In addition, the Falcons Gymnastics Center will cease operations and not be used to conduct gymnastics youth camps. Along with halting intercollegiate competition, the youth club team will no longer be sponsored by SPU."
-Female student-athlete opportunities being taken away for gymnasts across the country and, in particular, a unique opportunity in the North West area
-Program announced as discontinued this morning without notice or with precise, logical reasons
-Strong legacy of 47 years of successful SPU Gymnastics
-Strong community support hosting a club program to serve hundreds of local gymnasts in the community and excellent attendance at home competitions
-A successful tradition of academic excellence in the classroom, community outreach and leadership growth
-From SPU’s website: “Seattle Pacific has sponsored gymnastics since the 1974 season. The program has a proud history of producing outstanding alumnae, including women who earned 32 individual national championships and 221 All-America awards.”
-From SPU’s website: “The Falcons fantastic legacy in the gymnastics arena featured three national team champions: 1986 (NCAA Division II), 1992 (USAG) and 1997 (USAG).”
-The potential for conflict of interests with the current SPU Athletic Director Stava who has served as the Director of Operations for the National Collegiate Acrobatic and Tumbling Association since it’s inception 4 years ago.
