Why this petition matters

Started by Lauren Agam

Ever since the year 1959, Sweden has organised a song contest called Melodifestivalen in order to select their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The show has taken place 58 times, more than any other national selection. Melodifestivalen (AKA Melfest) has become one of the national finals that Eurovision fans like most. It's always something to which Eurofans look forward during NF season, but it usually ends with a feeling of disappointment and perhaps it's gotten stale over time.

On 7 March 2020, huge fan favourite Dotter lost by one point to The Mamas. It was the closest finish ever seen in Melodifestivalen, and perhaps the biggest upset in Eurovision history. In the days leading up to the Melfest grand final, Dotter led the betting odds by a huge margin, all international fan polls granted her a landslide win, and the fan reaction was amazing - she was already labelled a future Eurovision winner. Dotter was already a favourite to win Melfest before - in 2018 - but didn't make the grand final. This time, however, the reaction to Dotter's loss was much more critical.

The day after the news about Dotter's shocking loss came, Eurovision fans sought justice for her, theorising that the Austrian jury voted incorrectly and that the televoting wasn't properly counted. These claims are unfounded. The Mamas won fairly. However, it's undeniable that Dotter deserves to represent Sweden - if not in 2020, then in 2021.

If selecting an entry for Dotter internally sounds too harsh, that isn't necessarily the only option. From 1959 to 1961, Melodifestivalen was only used to select the song for a singer, who was selected beforehand, to sing it in Eurovision. Maybe it's time to bring back this system and bring justice to Dotter. There has to be a solution.
