Why this petition matters

Started by sarah tucker

At the time of his death on 9th June, there were more than sufficient nominations for Edward de Bono to be considered for a knighthood for his significant contribution to education and commerce to the UK and Commonwealth, and indeed around the world.  Despite this contribution which had phenomenal impact on education, commerce and government, there was a lack of any formal recognition by the UK government for this significant contribution during his lifetime.  This petition aims to address this omission.  Please could you add your name to this petition to honour a man who lived up to his name 'De Bono' - who during his lifetime achieved good on a global scale, and has left a legacy from which future generations will continue to benefit, and who's visionary work on 'thinking' has probably yet to be fully realised.

A posthumous honours I have been informed is rare, but Edward de Bono, physician, psychologist, visionary, author, inventor, philosopher, consultant, Nobel Prize Nominee and 'father' of lateral thinking, is rare and is deserving of such an honour.  As someone who has been researching his biography for the past five years, I know this, from speaking to his friends, colleagues and clients.  At a time, when lateral thinking is needed more than ever, it is time to give the recognition this extraordinary man deserves.

In his book 'The Use of Lateral Thinking' (1967) he defined lateral thinking as a means of escaping established ideas and perceptions in order to find new ones, and never has this been more needed.  The publication of this best selling book and subsequent work (over seventy books translated into 36 languages), including the invention of words such as PO, parallel think; Six Thinking Hats', DATT, and flows cape methods with schools, corporations, governments and world leaders, established him as the 'father' of lateral thinking.

There have been subsequent books, podcasts, courses on thinking and re thinking especially in recent years, where global pandemic has acted as catalyst to finding solutions where linear thinking has failed. Edward de Bono didn't need such stimuli. The authors of 'how to think books' follow on from much of what he established in his books of the 60s, 70s and 80s. They are the pathfinders. De Bono was the path. He deserves to receive the highest of honours and recognition from the UK government. Please add your signature.
