Why this petition matters

Started by Ed Finnegan

In Washington DC, the National Statuary Hall contains two statues of great representatives of each state. One of Georgia's two "best" is Alexander Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy. In his cornerstone speech, he wrote: "Our new government['s] foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man."  He contended that advances and progress in the science has proved that the 18th century view that all men are created equal was erroneous.  He stated that advances in science proved the enslavement of African Americans by white men was justified and it coincided with the Bible's teachings . He also stated that the Confederacy was the first country in the world founded on the principle of racial Supremacy.

No Georgian, No American, No Human Being can agree with those statements.  The statue is an embarrassment to us all and an insult to every Black American.

Now is the time to take down that statue and consider replacing it with one of Martin Luther King, Jr. He fought to change the laws.  Now is the time to change our hearts.
