Why this petition matters

Started by Edward Carpenter

Please join me in petitioning the US Congress and the US Department of Defense to change the name of Fort Hood to Fort Guillen.

This base is currently named after a Confederate general who fought to keep his fellow Americans enslaved, once describing African Americans as an "inferior race." He was personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of his own soldiers who he led to their deaths in a series of failed campaigns, and for the deaths of thousands of loyal Union soldiers who fought against him. This is not a name to be celebrated.

Conversely, PFC Vanessa Guillen was a loyal American soldier, who signed up to fight and die for her country, but lost her life instead at the hands of a fellow soldier, on the very base where she worked.

It is fitting that this base should henceforth bear her name, as a solemn reminder to every soldier and officer who passes through its gates that they must do more to eliminate the scourge of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and green-on-green violence in the ranks of our military, so that no more soldiers will suffer as PFC Guillen did.
