Another Christmas over and done with and a New Year has just begun. But how many people had to work over the festive period?

I have seen a few petitions already on this subject, but it would appear that they have not quite made it for consideration, so lets change that.

Reminiscing on the past, where shops would be closed on a Sunday, as this was a day of rest, it makes you wonder how we ever survived, could you imagine not being able to pop to your local supermarket to pick up some forgotten stuffing to go with your roast dinner?

How selfish have we become, in taking advantage of what we have today compared to 20 years ago, we think so much of ourselves, that we seem to forget that the people that serve us may be losing precious time that could be spent with family, a family who are schooling during the week and only have the weekends available to them but have to give up at least one of those days, in order to open up shop and serve our needs.

The same goes for Christmas and New Year.

We saw for the first time: John Lewis and Partners, Homebase, Aldi, Home Bargains, Marks and Spencer and Wickes gave all of their staff Boxing day off, which meant that none of these stores opened their doors on Boxing day.

We also saw how: Aldi, Lidl, Boots, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Wilko kept their doors closed on New Years Day.

They saw that these are the days, where people deserve to have a break, “a well earned rest over the Bank Holiday” as otherwise, Christmas day, is just another standard day off, with no real time for rest, or real enjoyment, as they have to endure the thought of an early night to be well enough for work on Boxing day.

I am hoping that this petition gets enough traction to be considered in Parliament, to give credit to our workers and get them all the days off that they deserve over Christmas and New Year.

This petition, is for consideration for all of our supermarkets, no matter how big or small, inclusive of all major supermarkets, mini markets, extra stores, petrol station shops and the like, to be closed on the following days: 25th December, 26th December and the 1st January.

Further consideration should also be taken to look at the potential for closing the same supermarkets, no matter how big or small, inclusive of all major supermarkets, mini markets, extra stores, petrol station shops and the like, to be closed on Bank Holidays.
