Why this petition matters

Started by Alexa El sharrak

The black community are incarcerated for marijuana drug charges when there are worse crimes that have been done. Despite roughly equal usage rates, Black people are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana. The prisons throughout America are filled with black people with these charges while people, who have actually done something wrong, have not been charged at all or are being let off the hook for being murderers and rapists just because of their privilege. When  people are arrested for possessing even tiny amounts of marijuana, it can have dire collateral consequences that affect their eligibility for public housing and student financial aid, employment opportunities, child custody determinations, and immigration status. It’s wasting valuable resources on people who deserve jail time like the murderers of George Floyd. This isn’t fair. BLM.
