Why this petition matters

Started by Abby Baquera

For a while, I knew that trans rights wasn't a big thing in our world. But recently, I saw a post on Instagram that wanted me to at least try to make a change.

Leelah Alcorn was a trans girl who felt like a girl in a boy's body at the age of four. At the age of 14, she found out transgender was a real thing. She tried talking to her christian parents about it, but they were saying it was a phase. In her words, she put in her suicide note, "When I was 16 I realized that my parents would never come around and that I would have to wait until I was 18 to start any sort of transitioning treatment, which absolutely broke my heart. The longer you wait, the harder it is to transition. I felt hopeless. That I was just going to look like a man in drag for the rest of my life. On my 16th birthday, when I didn't receive consent from my parents to start transitioning, I cried myself to sleep" She killed herself. No transgender person should have to feel that way at all. Leelah killed herself because her parents didn't accept her. She had no friends and felt completely hopeless. I don't want anyone to feel like that. If we can teach about transgender people in schools, less people might be like Leelah's parents. Her parents buried her in a suit and continued to call her a male. They put her birth name on her tombstone. They said she was a sixteen year old male who was accidentally hit by a truck. But we know what happened.

I'm hoping that if we teach about transgender people in schools, there will be less of all that. Less transphobes (hopefully), less trans suicides, less of a lot of that.
