CWU joined five other GNAC conference schools in opting out of the 2020-21 conference season in basketball, which does not begin until January 2021. CWU President James Gaudino remarked, "After looking at what we know, and considering all of the possibilities and trends regarding the spread of the virus, we determined it was in the best interest of the institution to cancel our seasons. It's a decision none of us wanted to make, but one that had to be made to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff."

The team has been working very hard to prepare for the season despite all of the changes they have had to deal with. With regular testing and certain protocols in place, having a modified conference season would certainly be feasible. They could've even delayed the season until later in the spring. Most other DII schools around the nation still plan on playing basketball this season. So to not even attempt to try playing the season is letting down the student-athletes and fans, and Wildcat Nation as a whole.
