The History of the LGBTQ+ Community Needs to Be Recognized in Education
Why this petition matters
All over the world, kids are coming out as queer. However, without really knowing much about the LGBTQ+ community, they may not really know much about how they feel. This can lead to confusion and not really knowing how to come out, or even about their origins.
If the U.S. Department of Education encourages schools to teach about the history of the LGBTQ+ community, this would benefit many queer students. Teachers can create a small course, maybe just 2 or 3 weeks long, to educate students on the LGBTQ+ community. I believe this will help many students in their journey. It can create a more open-minded and welcoming community. These kids are the future of our world, and many are queer.
I am one of these kids. I am queer, yet I don't really know much about my own community. I don't know much about sexualities, pride walks, or anything like that. I've had to do my own research on this, as my school does not go much into depth on this topic. Some people don't even know that the LGBTQ+ community exists.
As part of the future generation, I encourage the U.S. Department of Education to teach us about our history.
