Why this petition matters

Started by Beth Waldron

We petition the Town of Chapel Hill to revise the Deer Management Program to ban hunting within the city limits due to the public safety threat it presents.

Hunting has been documented in densely populated neighborhoods without the prior notification of nearby residents. There exists weak enforcement of the town’s Urban Archery Season managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Only one enforcement officer is assigned to a three county area covering Orange, Alamance and Caswell counties, making it challenging for violators to be caught in the act.

We respectfully ask the Council to ban hunting in the city limits and permit the harvesting of deer only by professionals during organized culls which are pre-approved by the town and for which residents are given advance notification.
