Picture this, the newest audio game just came out. It looks interesting and fun, and you would like to try it out. Unfortunately, it's a windows only game, and you have a Mac. No problem, you might say. I'll just install a virtual machine. Well, there are two problems with that. First, the latency can mess up parts of the gameplay. Second, virtual machines can only be 32-bit without running at a snail's pace. Bootcamp, Apple's built-in tool for running windows on a Mac, is a better option. There is no latency, and you get to use a 64-bit OS. So where's the problem? The problem is Bootcamp isn't exactly accessible.

The Bootcamp assistant app itself is fine. The new Windows operating system is fine after installation. The period in between those two states of operation is the problem. There is no way to make this part of the installation accessible, especially on newer Macs with no USB ports or built-in CD drives. Blind people, such as myself, are left staring at a lit screen, or if totally blind, nothing at all. There is no way to know what is happening on the computer.

Microsoft has taken steps to fix this issue. The Windows installer now contains spoken prompts, and the ability to install windows 10 by voice. It is Apple who needs to step up. Allow the computer's sound card to operate during installation. Allow us to use USB headsets. Just find some way to give access to those spoken prompts. Not all blind people live with someone else, and those twho do may not always have access to sighted assistance. On behalf of every Mac user who faces this problem, I urge you, step up and take action.
