Why this petition matters

Started by Terrance Ruth

In response to the protest and crying in the streets, over police violence, we are demanding our legislators to take action towards police accountability & oversight. We want the creation of the Department Civilian Justice bill in NC. This is a strong new step our state can make in response to the agony that we are seeing from communities across our state. The Department of Civilian Justice will be a new North Carolina State agency that will have oversight over all N. Carolina Police Departments, District Attorney's Offices and Department of Corrections, and Fire Departments.

THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED in the state of N. Carolina. A similar independent agency was adopted in New York, Georgia, and Louisiana. Furthermore, the Department of Civilian Justice bill will provide a solution by creating transparency at a statewide level. There are several notable leaders that are committed to this proposal around the country: Attorney N. Siegel, National ACLU, Latino Police Officers Association, one hundred Blacks in Law Enforcement, NC NAACP and Frank Serpico. All leaders supporting this bill has agreed to stand behind our communities & grassroots leaders to get this bill created & passed! NO MORE VIOLENCE by the hands of police!
