Why this petition matters

Started by Potomac Riverkeeper Network

The Trump National golf course on the Potomac became notorious in 2010 when they cut down 500 trees to get a “view” of the river, and unbelievably, it wasn’t illegal in Loudoun County to do this. Now they’ve done it again, cutting dozens of large trees right on the riverbank and dumping them into the Potomac! And while it’s still not illegal, we know it’s a stupid thing to do that shows total disregard for our environment and clean water. We need your help to make sure this doesn’t happen again!

Urge the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to adopt Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act and enact sensible regulations that prohibit this kind of reckless clearcutting in the riparian zone along the Potomac River. This tree clearing will result in increased sediment runoff and erosion of the streambank, degrading the river’s water quality and adding to the pollution that continues to degrade Chesapeake Bay downstream. Loudoun County needs to follow the example of counties in tidal areas of the Bay Watershed which have taken action to protect our rivers and Bay from harmful actions like these.

The Board of Supervisors has the authority to adopt portions of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act provisions which will afford the necessary protections. In fact, they considered just that in 2010, but failed to act. Too much time has passed and we can’t allow this to continue!

You care about the river as much as we do. Act now. Sign our petition to create the legislation we, and the river, need to preserve riparian buffers.

You can also write directly to the members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors – tell them to preserve our Nation’s River, and to do it now!
