St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Catholic church is the only parish dedicated to Korean Catholics in the Carolinas. Parishioners come from miles away to keep the sabbath and celebrate the joyous Mass each weekend. For many, this church is not only a house of worship but a home and a sanctuary. 

St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Catholic church first started as a small prayer group of Korean students and visiting scholars of NCSU and UNC-CH in the late 1980s. Later, it became a community as part of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cary, North Carolina in 1991. Since then, the parishioners of St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Catholic church has moved to their own parish and have grown to 450 parishioners with the help of our diocese, the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh.

On September 14th, 2020, the Town of Apex Planning Board members will vote on an expansion that will cut through the future site of our church and prevent Mass from being held in the future if the road is built. Also, this future plan will prevent the church from using our current septic system which will lead our church not being operable.

In addition to the church, the livelihood of the children who regularly attend for faith formation and Korean language school is threatened by this proposal. Many families are worried about the safety of their children due to the proximity of the proposed road to the church. Many children of this parish often play outside and with a major road crossing into the property, it will be a major safety hazard.

For many years, St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Catholic church has planned to expand the beautiful church campus to accommodate the rising numbers in parishioners. The master plan for the church includes an education building and a new large worship building. The faculty to provide for all prospective parishioners would become impossible with the proposed road. 

The town will place a major, busy road merely an arm’s reach from the church. As many of you can imagine, a road would make Mass impossible to hear through the traffic outside the windows. The proposed road being so close to the current building, the space of silent reflection around the holy tabernacle would no longer be able to provide a quiet place of sanctity and prayer. 

We need your support by signing this petition to prevent the destruction of St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Catholic church. Please share this petition with your family and friends to let the Town of Apex know the importance of God in this community.
