Why this petition matters

Started by Kat Jones

The Government has finally published its response to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) consultation. Despite 70% of the people responding saying the GRA needs to be reformed the Government has ditched plans to introduce better legislation for trans and non-binary people.

This means trans people will still not be able to self-identity as their true gender without a medical diagnosis. This isn’t fair or right - it will continue to cause suffering for the trans community so let’s tell the Government we won’t accept it.

This is incredibly damaging to the transgender community as they will still have to fight for a diagnosis of their gender dysphoria, meaning that they will have to prove to doctors that they are 'trans enough', which is incredibly unfair. This also means that, if a doctor is transphobic, they can misdiagnosed or refuse diagnosis.

A lot of people who are extremely close and influential people in my life identify as transgender and gender non-conforming. The fact that they're having to fight for their rights like this is something which pains me to see, trans people should be allowed to feel safe in modern society.

Please join me in calling on the UK Government to allow trans people to self-ID!

The current process to legally change gender is lengthy, intrusive and causes a lot of pain for the trans community. Last week The British Medical Association declared support for self-ID - which shows how important it is that this now happens. We can’t let the Government get away with this.

Trans men are men. Trans women are women. Non-binary people are non-binary. All identities are real and valid. The Government shouldn't be able to decide this.

Please sign my petition to stand up for the trans community today.
