House lawmakers have voted to increase mandatory minimum insurance coverage for commercial motor vehicles.

The amendment would effectively increase current insurance liability requirements for commercial vehicle drivers from $750,000 to $2 million.

The change comes in an amendment which was added to the proposed Highway Funding bill. It was passed through the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on a 37-27 vote.

According to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), increasing the minimum liability coverage will “do absolutely nothing to improve the safety on our highways.”

Owner operator semi truck insurance policies have increased in recent years and now are usually priced between $12,000 and $18,000. Sometimes even over $30,000 according to Commercial Truck Insurance HQ.

Insurance payments have been eating up larger and larger percentages of fleet operating costs. If the required coverage were to double due to a change in federal law, it could put a huge strain on carriers.

Since February, COVID-19 has nearly crippled our country's trucking industry.

The level of freight available – and the rates to haul it – have plummeted!

This means many of the smallest companies that make up the vast majority of motor carriers are hurting.

With concerns over a second wave of COVID-19 outbreaks, it isn’t clear what the economy will look like in coming weeks, months, or years.

“Small business truckers have been working around the clock to keep our country supplied, while risking their personal well-being and struggling to stay in business due to historically low freight rates caused by COVID-19,”

The increase in premiums would “destroy small trucking businesses in every corner of our country.

As concerned citizens, we urge you to vote no on "Garcia Amendment 62."
