Why this petition matters

Started by Andrew Turnbull

Professional musicians based in the UK need to protect their interests like every other profession does. None more so than in the live performance arena. The problem is that their professional interests are easily undermined by the prevailing landscape and relative impotence of the British musician's union to currently do much about things.

It should therefore be a legal requirement for all performers - however they are classed in terms of amateur to semi professional to professional - to be registered as performers with the musician's union; and to pay an annual fee that reflects their recognized status. It would therefore be possible for the union to oversee a national picture and enforce legal requirements in which performers are paid a minimum wage depending on their recognized status.

Furthermore, it should be possible for the musician's union to encourage the hire of professionals in the field of live performance - from venues to festivals etc - as opposed to those for whom musical activity is a sideline or hobby.

It isn't about trying to stop anyone from being engaged with music; but it is about leveling the playing field and those with recognized professional status being able to protect their interests in the face of things.
