Why this petition matters

Started by Owlthorpe Fields Action Group

Sheffield City Council recently sold Site E of Owlthorpe Fields for housing but two areas (Sites C and D) remain in the Local Plan allocated for housing.  As a consequence, if Sites C & D were developed, it would result in an irreversible environmental and social impact on the area.

Owlthorpe Fields has rewilded over the past 25+ years, with over 20 species of self-set trees, 72 species of grasses, over 75 species of birds (a number of which are on the RSPB Red and Amber danger lists and some specially protected), together with numerous mammals and invertebrate species.

There is no local municipal park here, as promised in the original plans made back in the 60’s.  There is no accessible open green space where we can walk and be close to nature, except for Owlthorpe Fields.  We speak not just for our community, but for the wildlife and for the habitat they live in – therefore we must speak loudly on their behalf.

In 2019, Sheffield City Council declared a Climate Emergency and recently also declared a Nature Emergency, however, in the terms of sale for Site E, there is an option to spread spoil on the rest of Owlthorpe Fields (subject to completing ecological assessments and getting Planning Permission).  This cannot be allowed to happen!

‘We therefore call upon Sheffield City Council to immediately remove Sites C and D, currently allocated for housing, from the Local Plan: Designate Sites C & D as a Local Wildlife Site and/or Nature Reserve to preserve wildlife and maintain a community resource and protect sites C and D from damage during construction works associated with Site E.’
