Overview:

On June 27, 2019, Hastings County Council approved by a vote of 3-9 in favour of passing Official Plan Amendment No. 18, which will change the designation for 2287 Bay Lake Rd. on parts of lots 51 and 52 of Faraday Township from “Rural” to “Extractive (Active)”. This means that an aggregate quarry can start operation. It appears that Hastings County Council favours Freymond Lumber Ltd.,
in partnership with Fowler Construction, over the residents and businesses on Bay Lake Road, Gaebel Road, Highway 62 and other nearby roads. Hastings County Council has favoured a proposed extractive business over existing tourism businesses.

Residents have until Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 to provide comments about the proposal to the Government of Ontario.

Why It Matters:

1. Official Plan Amendment No. 18 sets a precedent that will allow Hastings County Council to put
quarries next to other residential neighbourhoods and thriving tourism businesses.
2. Detracts from future tourism opportunities.
3. A massive increase in traffic starting at 6:00 AM and continuing all day.
4. Heavy use from trucks will damage our roads leading to increased congestion and delays.
5. Negative impact on safety - roads will be less safe for children getting on and off the bus, pedestrians, cars entering and exiting driveways/side roads, and cyclists.
6. The negative impact from extra noise and vibration from trucks traveling on various routes across the region
7. Negative impact on air quality from dust pollution within the region. Citizens living adjacent to pits and quarries or in surrounding areas have a higher instance of bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Fine dust particulates are particularly hazardous to children and the elderly.
8. Faraday Township is known for higher radon gas emissions and blasting could cause cracks in your foundation/home. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Ontario.
9. Proposed pit and quarry will be operating below the water table leading to potential contamination of groundwater and surface water which supplies numerous wells.
10. Property values will decline along Bay Lake Road, Gaebel Road, Battelle Road, Highway 62 and other connecting roads and the haul route.
