Stop Historic Preservation in Wallingford
Stop Historic Preservation in Wallingford
Why this petition matters
Seattle is in a Housing Crisis
Wallingford neighbors are attempting to designate thousands of expensive single family homes as an "historic district" by obtaining honorary designation from the National Register of Historic Places. This is an effort in vein attempted to maintain the neighborhood's history of racial and economic segregation to prevent people of color and renters from joining their community. With the designation, they will have the power to halt development plans and influence the city to further landmark single family homes as small apartments or townhomes are proposed.
Historic Preservation Weaponized
This historic preservation attempt is to maintain Wallingford as a wealthy white neighborhood with no housing growth. Right now, the demographics are 85% white and homes average well over one million dollars. Wallingford's kit houses are indistinguishable from similar neighborhoods of the period around the city and country. With such designation, the city can landmark single family homes when a small apartment or townhome project is proposed. The additional review will add cost and time to an already cumbersome process and is nothing more than an attempt to prevent development from happening.
Rooted in Segregation
Seattle's single family neighborhoods are rooted in racial covenants, redlining and zoning all in an attempt to maintain them as wealthy white neighborhoods. And now they want this historically preserved forever.
Let's Stop This Now!
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION to prevent racial segregation and to stop this effort to designate a white, wealthy neighborhood as historic. Preventing it will allow Wallingford to contribute to housing growth as Seattle moves on from the racial segregation associated with how neighborhoods like this developed.
