Why this petition matters

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown Jr., an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot 6 times by 28-year-old white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown was accompanied by his 22-year-old friend Dorian Johnson. After the shooting Brown's  dead body laid on the street for everyone to see including his mother for more than three hours. It took at least an hour before he was covered with a sheet. Brown's case was poorly investigated. Darren Wilson was allowed to leave the scene on his own, giving him time to shower and further tamper with evidence including being allowed to turn in his own weapon that he used to shoot and kill Brown. Additionally, the police department continued to cover up these unbelievable actions of Darren Wilson. They stated that the officer was reporting on a robbery, but Darren Wilson admitted that was not the case and saw two black men in the middle of the street so he decided to take action. He knew nothing about a robbery at that time. A report was not taken after this shooting and this case had many cover ups. There was never a robbery but instead a calculated, partial disclosure of an event that the police department used as a way to intentionally try to discredit Brown's character in effort to justify Wilson's actions. The underlying truth is this young black man was shot and killed for no reason other than for being black. Michael Brown was a son, a brother, and a friend. His life mattered and deserves justice. Darren Wilson was never charged but with the significant amount of evidence and proof of continued excessive force of white officers towards black people, the case needs to be reopened and Wilson needs to be charged with murder. Darren Wilson intentionally shot to death, a young, unarmed black male, that...had his hands up!
