Why this petition matters

Started by Manuel Arellano

“Please, I can’t breathe. My stomach Hurts. My Neck Hurts. Everything Hurts. They’re Going to Kill Me”. These were some of the last words George Floyd spoke before he was taken to the hospital where he took his last breath.

Videos taken by bystanders reveal George Floyd pleading to the officers he can’t breath.

This comes just after the Ahmaud Arbery case where white men felt confident enough in the power of their skin to trail a black man and shoot him down without the thought of repercussions.

To say police hold this same power is an understatement. Look at previous cases like Eric Garner, Oscar Grant, Antonio Zambrano-Montes, and Yassin Mohamed that left black and brown communities shaken because of the discrimination they’ve faced with the police on the simple fact of their skin.

Although there have been heavier restrictions put on police like the required body cameras. Police brutality against these communities is still prevalent in today's society as seen with the most recent incident with George Floyd.

Not only are we demanding justice for George Floyd, but for heavier accountability from the police department nationwide. The police department was made for the people, they’re actions in recent years contradict their very purpose. To make matters worse, they’ve turned to pepper spray and tear gas, to break down the protest for George Floyd.

The clear contrast to the masses of white people protesting against the anti-lockdown during the pandemic that have gone unharmed or without repercussions, makes it clear that this issue is solely based on the color of one’s skin.

Imagine a world with the death of a man for forging a signature. Not even a violent crime...that’s the reality of today’s world.

By taking these officers accountable (Officers Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng), we’re one step closer in not only bringing George Floyd justice but the many police brutality victims justice. Until one day this issue doesn’t impact our communities.

Please help us get justice for George and his family!
