WNY Peace Center Statement: Deyanna Davis' Cruel & Unusual Punishment

Deyanna Davis was driving home from a drive-by repast that was serving as her mother-in-law's funeral with two friends in the car when she found herself in the middle of a protest with extreme, militarized police presence. Her family says she was shot before she hit the officer(s). Certainly there was tear gas, chaos, and gunfire - all while she was still at the wheel trying to drive, and stay safe.

Her mother apologized and stressed that Deyanna didn't mean to hit anyone.

Deyanna is being held at the Erie County Holding Center, known for shockingly poor medical treatment that has led to "homicide by medical neglect," ruled or evident in a number of the many deaths at the ECHC, some 30 under Sheriff Howard. Davis has also been treated unfairly (depriving her of phone privileges) by personnel who expressed their anger that she had hurt an officer.

We at the WNY Peace Center have striven to get people released - especially during the pandemic - and to have Sheriff Howard removed from office as he is obviously not up to the job.

Deyanna needs healing. The road should have been blocked off by the police. She has already suffered a huge amount. The gun allegedly found in the car does not change the above facts. She needs to be released from the ECHC, at the very least.

She is not a flight risk at all, with her family including four children here in Buffalo. We urge DA John Flynn to release her immediately. To do otherwise is cruel and unusual punishment.
