Why this petition matters

Started by The Broward County Council of Muslim Student Association of Middle and High Schools

Muslims celebrate two holidays that are important to them, Eid ul-Adha (Day of sacrifice) and Eid ul-Fitr (marks the end of Ramadan). For the past four years the Muslim community has been requesting that whenever these days fall on an instructional day, it should be given as a day off where schools and administrative offices are closed. This would ensure inclusivity and embrace diversity. Last year there was an amendment to the 2020-2021 school calendar to include May 13th, 2021 as a day off pending testing. The only test that is affected on that day was AP testing. College Board had already identified the importance of that day to Muslim students. As a result, they have included an additional testing day, May 18th, 2021 as an alternative to May 13th, 2021 with no penalty.

College Board has acknowledged with the following message:

"The AP Program fully supports Muslim students who observe Eid ul-Fitr. We understand that observant students may not attend school on Thursday, May 13, 2021, and we don’t expect them to take AP exams on that date. We also recognize that some schools may choose to close for the holiday and won’t administer exams.
AP Exams are administered annually during the first two weeks of May. However, we always provide alternate testing dates in the third and fourth weeks of May for any students with religious observances – and for schools that may have closures – during the testing window. To further support students, schools, and districts in the 2020-2021 school year, we’re planning to offer all the same exams that will be administered on May 13, again on Tuesday, May 18. This will help ensure that students observing Eid ul-Fitr have an opportunity to test on a day that
won’t conflict with any other AP exams they may need to take during the second half of May. "

The Broward County School District can choose to close schools with the accommodation provided by College Board and adopted by other cities such as Montgomery County in Maryland and New York City.

If we choose to close schools  on May 13th and test on May 18th, it would be for everyone NOT just Muslim students!

As we also prepare for the 2021-2022 calendar we are requesting that May 3rd, 2022 be considered as a day off. FSA testing window is May 2nd to May 13th. School Districts have the flexibility when they administer the test.

We urge you, your friends and family to sign this petition in an attempt to make our voices heard! We are in this together!
