Why this petition matters

Started by Daniel Hugo

In these tumultuous times, with a pivotal election on the horizon, American Voters will once again have an opportunity to shape the future of the United States of America, in the near term and far into the future. The scope of the job of President of the United States is almost beyond comprehension, with each day bringing unforeseen challenges and unknowable possibilities. We make selections based on personal views, local concerns, and individual ideological considerations. How to choose?

The Kennedy-Nixon debate in September, 1960, was the very first time the American electorate was afforded an opportunity to hear and see their candidates meet to tackle questions put to them face-to-face. In that and the three debates that followed, the candidates took questions from members of the news media, and this approach continues today. Are members of the news media best suited to explore the qualifications of each candidate for voters to evaluate?

We propose that the candidates for the Office of President in the election of 2020, participate in at least one televised debate, available for all to hear and see, moderated by those who know the role best: most recent former Presidents George W Bush and Barack H Obama II.
