Why this petition matters

Started by Protect Our Youth

This petition has evolved from the focus being on the Toronto Catholic District School Board, to including all Ontario Catholic & Public boards that receive public funding, in 2023. The main objective remains to protect our 2SLGBTQI youth & families from discrimination in school.

Not only does this protection impact student safety and achievement, there is no faith that promotes hatred the way we have witnessed extremists spew in the direction of these students, families and education staff. We will not back down until data proves that this community is thriving at a level that their peers are.

::

We are writing to you as concerned citizens, advocates, and supporters of inclusive education in Ontario. We are deeply troubled by the rising hate, discrimination, and disinformation campaigns targeting 2SLGBTQI (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex) students, families, and staff members within the Ontario Catholic school system.

All Ontario schools, including Catholic schools, are bound by the Ontario Human Rights Code and Program Memorandum 119 (Developing and implementing equity and inclusive education policies in Ontario schools). These legislations oblige educational institutions to create and maintain a safe, discrimination-free, and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Despite these legal obligations, 2SLGBTQI students, families, and staff continue to face systemic bias, barriers to success, and a hostile school climate. It is crucial that we address these issues promptly and take decisive action to protect the rights, dignity, and well-being of these individuals.

Therefore, we respectfully call upon you, as decision makers, to take the following measures:

1. Publicly Affirm the Rights of 2SLGBTQI Individuals
Issue a clear statement expressing unwavering support for the rights and well-being of 2SLGBTQI students, families, and staff within Ontario schools. This statement should emphasize that discrimination, bullying, harassment, and exclusion based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression will not be tolerated.

2. Strengthen Anti-Discrimination Policies
Enforce existing policies, including Program Memorandum 119, and develop comprehensive anti-discrimination policies specifically tailored to protect 2SLGBTQI students, families, and staff. These policies should outline clear expectations, procedures, and consequences for addressing instances of discrimination, bullying, and harassment.

3. Support Student-Led Initiatives
Encourage and support the establishment of 2SLGBTQI student groups (e.g., Gay-Straight Alliances) within all Ontario schools. These groups play a crucial role in providing support, fostering inclusivity, and combating discrimination, while promoting the well-being and success of all students.

4. Combat Disinformation Campaigns
Launch a comprehensive information campaign to counter disinformation surrounding 2SLGBTQI issues in Ontario education, particularly Catholic education. Utilize various communication channels, including social media, parent-teacher associations, and public forums, to provide accurate information, dispel myths, and promote understanding and acceptance.

We firmly believe that by taking these steps, you will not only fulfill your legal obligations but also demonstrate your commitment to creating discrimination-free, safe, and equitable school communities for all students, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, we can foster an inclusive educational environment that celebrates diversity, promotes respect, and prepares students for a compassionate and diverse society.
