Why this petition matters

Started by Jalyn Radziminski

We, people of Fort Wayne and/or within Allen County, Indiana, demand the following for us, our children and our community:

1. We demand a formal and public apology from Mayor Tom Henry and from Chief Steve Reed of Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) for the violence and misconduct towards peaceful protestors. Additionally, we demand a formal apology from Prosecuting Attorney Karen Richards for excessive charges against peaceful, non-violent protestors at the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

2. We demand the Fort Wayne Police Department to stop pointing loaded weapons at unarmed citizens and children.

3. We demand Prosecutor Karen Richards to:

  • Release all protestors charged of misdemeanor and petty crimes, and the clear of  their records.
  • Discontinue her use of social media, facial recognition technology, and news outlets to identify, track, and arrest peaceful protestors.

4. We demand the ban on chokeholds, strongholds, and any other means of physical restraint that cuts off a person’s airways in Fort Wayne, and advocacy to ban this in the state of Indiana at large.

5 We demand the end of qualified police immunity.

  • Qualified immunity is doctrine that has become one of the chief ways in which law enforcement avoids accountability for misconduct. This is a doctrine that shields government officials from being held personally liable for constitutional violations—like the right to be free from excessive police force—for money damages under federal law so long as the officials did not violate “clearly established” law.
  • Our local and state-wide police force should be held to the same standard of integrity as all citizens.

6. We demand the following to be mandatory for the City of Fort Wayne’s police force and advocacy to implement these in State level police forces:
Implicit Bias, Diversity and Inclusion courses and evaluations
Mental Health Evaluations

7, We demand the Mayor Henry to establish a Criminal Justice Commission that appoints civilian, community based representatives to address the concerns that include, but not limited to:

  • Decrease the police budget and invest in education, social services, and our community healthcare.
  • Create anti-racial profiling laws
  • Hate crimes
  • Accountability of Police Officers to citizens in public complaint reports and forums.

8. We demand an immediate list of Fort Wayne police officers with a history of violence, bias, and/ or misconduct to be publicly accessible to the community.

9. We want Fort Wayne to be an example and set precedent for our state. Mayor Henry, Prosecuting Attorney Karen Richards, and Chief Steve Reed of the Fort Wayne Police Department to take the time to meet with your community and serve this list of our needs before it is too late for our community.
