Help us ban E-waste from Landfill in New Zealand!

Signing this petition with your name and email will help us to raise awareness and show the Government that we support action in preventing the continued dumping of e-waste in landfills.  New Zealand's environment must be kept clean, green and safe for our future generations to come, action must be taken NOW!

Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of New Zealand’s largest growing waste streams. With the use of electronics in households increasing every year, as well as the rate that Kiwis are disposing of them, it is imperative for the Government to take action towards preventing the dumping of it in landfill.

The repercussions of dumping e-waste in landfill is enormous. According to a study undertaken in Whangarei, as much as 98% of household electronics end up in landfill. The components found in old computers, phones and appliances can contain large amounts of toxic heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium, which left unchecked, can cause serious damage to our beautiful green environment, including our water supply and soil.

This isn’t an issue our future generations should have to face and can be prevented with the right support. While e-waste may contain hazardous heavy metals, it also contains valuable reusable metals that can be recycled, such as steel, gold and silver.  With the correct facilities and staff, this can be processed effectively and efficiently.

Across the ditch, e-waste has already been outright banned from landfill in several states. Almost all developed European countries have also put bans in place. It’s shameful for New Zealand to be so far behind in this regard, considering we promote and advertise our country as “beautiful and green”. There’s nothing pretty about this!
