Why this petition matters

Started by Cade Carnegie

On May 1st 2019, around 21:00-22:00, I was going home from Air Cadets, and to do so I have to get the bus because I live in Amble and cadets are in Alnwick.

There were a group of older boys there, and they thought they could do whatever because I was an unthreatening 15-year-old girl (that they KNEW from school, and they KNEW I didn't do anything when people verbally assault me).

They threw rocks, stones, and bottles at me. The first bottle that made contact (half full, into my side) made me scream involuntarily.

I proceeded to have a panic attack, and had to get a lift home from a guy and his girlfriend who were passing and heard me screaming.

My dad called the police, who took the report and then asked us to make sure there was footage.

We call the customer care service for Arriva, only to be told after an hour of waiting that the Northumberland County Council runs the Alnwick bus station.

We call the Council. The Council say they don't have any cameras there.

We check the station itself, it says Arriva runs the cameras there and it has a number to call about it. (The sign has since been removed, however the other two signs have not.)

We call the number, which is deactivated. We call the customer care line again, who say they only keep the footage for two weeks. It's been seven days at this point.

We call the police to ask what's happening because at this point we haven't heard from Arriva in a few days and we haven't heard anything from the police since the initial report.

We ask why they're taking this so casually (this is directly to the police inspector). We learn that the initial report wasn't even filed. The police themselves then call the customer support line, wait for another hour, get told they have to pick up a physical copy of the footage.

The officer assigned to the case was on night duty for two weeks, which meant it took two weeks for them to get the footage.

They then have to travel an hour up the road to Berwick, this is from Alnwick, to actually watch the footage because the format Arriva use isn't compatible with the local police station. They then relay to us that the camera quality was not sufficient enough to identify the assaulters. From there, the case dropped because they legally had no foothold.

Arriva promises us that they will update the signs, as well as do all they can to improve matters at the station. It has been six months. At most, one of the cameras have been removed. It is unclear if that camera even worked in the first place.

Arriva also claimed that they had two cameras on the inside of the station, and one on the outside. After a brief look, they have three cameras inside the station and none outside.

The Northumberland Gazette, which was being cc'd to the email conversations the entire time, did nothing with this. Nothing. At all. No article, no acknowledgement. Local girl gets assaulted and not only does it take more than a month for anything substantial to happen, it gets dropped because the local bus station doesn't have quality cameras.

The outcome? I get paranoid going to that station now, night or day. If there's anybody else sitting waiting for a bus, I have to record audio in case something happens.

The only other time since that I've been at that station with people my age, on Halloween, they got creepy and even to this day, I have our conversations recorded on my phone.

The cameras haven't been updated, one camera has been removed. The main sign has been removed, but the signs on the outside of the station have not.

Not to mention, the bus station is downright filthy. This is better than other stations, such as the stop by the high school. However, covered in spiders and dirt is not much of a standard. Granted, that station is managed by the Council, as said by the sign on the station.

Additionally, County Councilman Gordon Castle promised to do 'all [he] could' to remedy this situation

I don't want money or anything with this petition. I want Arriva to acknowledge they messed up, and fix the problem:

  • Update the signs to be accurate, with an active telephone number. As well as replacing the now-removed larger sign detailing the presence of CCTV cameras and who manages them.
  • Have working HD cameras that are up to an evidentiary level (can be used in court), that cover the entire interior of the station, as well as the bus parking, and the entrances to the station itself that are in a format compatible for the local police station.
  • Keep the station to some level of cleanliness, at least making sure graffiti is removed.
