Stop the University of Georgia from Restricting Student Access to Voting
Stop the University of Georgia from Restricting Student Access to Voting
Why this petition matters
The University of Georgia has made a troubling decision to disallow early voting on campus, which was available to students in the 2018 election. As students, faculty, staff, friends, alumni, and Dawgs fans, we strongly urge the University to immediately change course and not be complicit in voter suppression.
Voting is an essential component of civic engagement that UGA should seek to promote. Removing the ability of students, faculty, and staff to vote on campus, while allowing the UGA football season to proceed, sends the wrong message about our university. Certainly, the university can find a way to allow both.
We find it interesting that the Administration would use student safety as an excuse to limit access to democracy while disregarding student welfare in other regards. We have confidence that the Administration can, at the very least, provide students the ability to safely vote. Voting, after all, is taking place across the country, including on other campuses.
The Fair Fight U Chapter at UGA will continue fighting for the rights of all eligible students to access voting and have their votes counted. UGA students demand better from their Administration.
Go Dawgs!
