Vanessa Guillen was last seen on April 22, 2020 following allegations of sexual assault by her superior. On July 1, 2020, her remains were found 30 miles outside of Fort Hood. Her family was misinformed, ignored and led to believe that the situation was being handled properly. There is no longer space to respond to these situations with "unfortunately, things like this happen all of the time." This is a call for IMMEDIATE ACTION.

Hundreds, if not thousands of female (and in some cases male) Soldiers are sexually harassed or assaulted annually. The military continues to prove that they do not have the means or the ability to investigate these situations properly. They lack the proper training, sensitivity and care that is required to properly address sex crimes. Unit level leadership continues to show that they make minimal efforts to improve and this is where the complaints originate.

There is a serious miscarriage of justice that results from these cases and ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

This petition aims to remove ALL investigative power, legal authority, and any other jurisdictional limits that the US military and Department of Defense have in handling these cases. It is time to develop an autonomous organization who is properly equipped with resources and training to handle these cases.
