On 24th of January, 2020, the United Nations Official Instagram account have uploaded a post which introduces the ‘Lunar New Year’ as ‘Chinese Lunar Year.’

The first sentence of the post says ‘Lunar New Year’ correctly, but on the last two sentences, the United Nations has used the expression ‘The Chinese Lunar Year.’
Moreover, the postage stamp background image description is also misleading.
The description “Chinese Lunar Calendar” of the issued postage stamp background also explains as if China is the only country celebrating the ‘Lunar New Year.’
Within the spirit of the United Nations, as the UN respects the culture of every single country or ethnic group, if the UN agrees with this issue, it is more accurate to leave out the expression “Chinese.”
In addition to this, according to the fact that the stamps annually issued by ‘UN stamps’ which has been illustrating as “Chinese Lunar Year”, can be seen as the evidence that the United Nations has never regarded the description specifying “Chinese” as a problem with the ‘New Year’ notation.
The Lunar New Years day is a holiday celebrated by Asian people,
but it is an obvious problem to restrict the holidays of East Asian countries only to Chinese holidays.
This can be recognized as if the United Nations explicitly supports of China’s cultural hegemony, whereas the United Nations should control conflicts and disputes around the world and understand and respect other culture among the UN member states.
This is a conspicuous disregard for Asians such as Koreans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos. in which they have different cultures from China for the ‘Lunar New Year’ holidays.
Above all, the United Nations describing the holiday only as ‘Chinese New Year’, not ‘Lunar New Year’ in English language is ignoring the cultural diversity
and unique identities of Asian people, who have different ‘Lunar New Year’ cultures.
It also violates the UN spirit of understanding and respecting the cultures and histories around the world.
Because of the information provided by the United Nations, the ‘Lunar New Year’ holidays is imprinted as ‘Chinese New Year.’
This is fostering conflict by spreading incorrect awareness across the world by conspicuously disregarding Asians countries such as Korea,
Vietnam, and the Philippines, which are member states of the United Nations with different cultures from China.
Even though each country has different cultures and traditions in their respective countries, international organization such as the United Nations defying different cultures and traditions only as Chinese culture is against the trend of respecting the unique culture and identity of countries in the globalization era of the 21st century.
It is also an obstacle to world peace, where we respect each other.
For your reference, foreign media has recognized this error in countries where mislabeled the ‘Lunar New Year’ as ‘Chinese New Year’, and has rectified it.
One of them is the Australian press ‘The Australian’.
According to the article posted online on the 30th of January, 2019, Sydney’s festival name has been changed from ‘Chinese New Year’ to ‘Lunar New Year’
According to the article, Sydney has officially rebranded its annual celebration of ‘Chinese New Year’ to the ‘Lunar New Year’ Festival, ending years of controversy surrounding the name of the most significant cultural event celebrated by Chinese,
Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian communities in Australia.
We demand the United Nations to redress the description ‘Chinese New Year’ to ‘Lunar New Year’.
And also on the stamp background image illustration, describing “Chinese Lunar Calendar” of the UN officially issued postage stamp background
as if China is the only country celebrating the ‘Lunar New Year’, should be rectified.
We call for quick corrections in line with the spirit of the United Nations, respecting the cultures of each nation.

유엔에서 쓴 표현은 첫 문장에는 Lunar New year 제대로 됐는데 밑에서 두 번째 문장이랑 마지막 문장에서 'The Chinese Lunar Year'라는 표현을 썼습니다
또한 게시물에 올린 사진의 우표 모음 배경 사진도 잘못 표기되었습니다. 발행한 우표의 설명에 중국에서만 설날을 기념하는 것처럼 ‘Chinese Lunar Calendar’라고 표기하고 있습니다.
유엔에서 우표 발행할 때는 유엔 정신에 맞게 각국의 문화를 존중하듯이 이 문제에 공감하신다면 Chinese 라는 표현을 빼는 것이 옳습니다.
유엔이 매년 설날 마다 발행해 온 unstamps의 우표 설명에 Chinese lunar year을 표기하고 있는 것 또한 잘못된 설날 표기를 아무 문제없이 여겨왔다는 증거라고 볼 수 있습니다.
설날이 아시아 사람들이 함께 기념하는 명절인데 유엔이 아시아 각국들의 축제(휴일, 명절)를 중국의 명절이라고 제한하는 것은 문제입니다.
이는 전 세계 국가 간 갈등과 분쟁을 조절하고 유엔 회원국 간 다른 문화를 이해하고 존중해야할 유엔이 중국의 문화패권을 노골적으로 지지하고 있는 인식을 줄 수 있습니다.
이는 특히 설날에 대한 중국과 다른 문화를 가지고 있는 한국과 베트남, 필리핀 등 아시아 민족을 노골적으로 무시하는 행태입니다.
무엇보다 유엔에서 설날의 영어 표기를 (Lunar New Year)가 아닌 (Chinese New Year)로 표기하는 것은 중국과 다른 설 문화를 가지고 있는 아시아 각 나라와 다른 민족의 문화 다양성과 고유 정체성을 무시하는 것입니다.
또한 전 세계 각자의 문화와 역사를 이해하고 존중하는 유엔 정신에도 정면으로 위배되는 것입니다.
유엔의 이 같은 정보 전달로 인해 세계인들에게 설은 '중국 설'로 각인되고 있습니다. 이는 중국과 다른 문화를 가진 유엔 회원국인 한국과 아시아 민족을 노골적으로 무시하는 인식을 세계에 확산시켜 갈등을 조장하는 것입니다.
유엔과 같은 세계적인 국제기구가 각 나라마다 서로 다른 문화와 전통이 있음에도 중국의 문화로만 규정하는 것은 21세기 세계화시대 나라의 고유한 문화와 정체성을 존중하는 흐름에도 역행합니다. 또한 국가 간 상호 존중하는 세계 평화에도 걸림돌이 됩니다.
참고로 설날을 중국 설날로 인식하고 있는 나라들의 오류를 해외 언론에서도 인식하고 올바르게 조명하고있습니다.
대표적으로 2019년 1월 30일 호주 언론사 디오스트레일리언 기사(theaustralian.com.au)에 따르면 호주 시드니 설날 축제이름이 기존 중국 설날에서 설날로 변경이 되었습니다.
시드니는 기존 중국 설날 축제를 설날 축제로 명칭을 변경한다면서 그 이유로 설날 문화가 중국뿐만 아니라 한국, 베트남 등 다른 아시아 커뮤니티와 함께 하고 있음에도 중국 설날으로 규정하는 것에 대해 아시아 다른 민족 구성원들의 항의가 있었기 때문이라고 밝혔습니다.
이에 우리는 유엔 이 설날을 중국설날로 표기한 내용을 시정 할 것을 요구합니다.
또한 유엔에서 공식 발행한 우표의 설명에 중국에서만 설날을 기념하는 것처럼 ‘Chinese Lunar Calendar’라고 표기된 부분도 각국의 문화를 존중하는 유엔 정신에 맞게 빠른 시정을 요구합니다.
