Why this petition matters

Started by Bangor Alumni

Bangor University has proposed a third round of redundancies in three years in response to the challenges being faced by the Higher Education sector in the UK. This equates to around £13million worth of savings and close to 200 job losses - 120 in professional services and 80 academic posts.

Whilst the university states that this is due to lower recruitment due to Covid-19, the financial position of the university has been uncertain for several years now. [1] [2]

Current and former students at Bangor University have consistently rated the student experience highly, with good and consistent scores in the National Student Survey and through the receiving of a Gold award in the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017 (one of only 8 in the country at that time).

We need to fight this current round of cuts and urge the university to work with UCU, Unite and Unison to find another way - UCU members have already voted to offer an alternative solution through a two year 'salary sacrifice'.

As students, staff, alumni and members of the wider community, we call on the Executive Board and Senior Management Team to work with us to find another more sustainable way forward and protect jobs through this global crisis.
