Why this petition matters

Started by Danielle Tiplady

I’m a nurse. I get up at the crack of dawn for 12 hour shifts, nursing people in our National Health Service. I have seen first hand how our NHS is on its knees - and how we desperately need more registered nurses in order to meet demand so that we can safely care for patients.

In their manifesto, the Conservative Party pledged to protect the NHS and recruit 50,000 new nurses. Now they’ve won the election I am calling on the Prime Minister to honour this pledge.

Boris Johnson - we are holding you to account. We want those 50,000 registered nurses, and we want to know when this promise will be delivered.

At the handover from my night-shift this morning, we were incredibly short staffed in my ward. The situation is critical. Our precious NHS is under threat and recruiting more nurses is an integral part in saving it.

Currently more than 4.4 million people are waiting for a routine operation or procedure and there are more than 100,000 vacancies in the NHS.

I feel fortunate to be able to make a difference to the patients I treat. But I don’t know if I can go on much longer.

The nursing shortage is a desperate and dangerous situation, and I’m calling on the new Government to sort it out and make it a priority. We need to see a full plan for how you will recruit and support registered nurses, and when you will make this happen.

You promised there would be 50,000 more nurses in the NHS. Now deliver. Urgently. We are all waiting.
