Insurance companies discriminating against Medical Cannabis users

Canada celebrated the day that Cannabis was made legal.  But Medical Cannabis patients are still suffering and another legal fight is on the horizon.  Medical users of Cannabis have had several successful cases in the courts, including the Allard decision.  The decision was made to allow medical users to grow their own medicine and to have reasonable access.  But, now medical patients are fighting a bigger case of discrimination.  Insurance companies are refusing to insure medical patients who want to grow their own medicine.  One patient is devastated as he is also a designated grower for other patients who are unable or do not have the space to grow. Many of these patients are fighting serious battles with Cancer and life long conditions like PTSD, Epilepsy, Anxiety, MS and many others,  Many of these people have turned to family or friends who know how to grow because of the cost of buying from Government approved Licensed producers.  Their voices need to be heard.  In a recent article it was stated:  "Canadian home insurers should be looking “very carefully” at the wording of their exclusion clauses for illicit drugs, said Mouna Hanna, a Toronto-based insurance defence lawyer with Dolden Wallace Folick LLP, at the Canadian Claims Summit. 

According to the Human Rights website:  Every person has the right to be free from discrimination in insurance in the areas of services, contracts and employment based on enumerated grounds under the Code. Insurance usually falls within the area of services or employment, depending on the context of the complaint.
