Why this petition matters

We need to step up and change this issue now as it has gone on for far too long. In the Hair, Makeup and Beauty industry there is not enough training in the core qualifications for clients of all Ethnicities. We are failing as an industry to represent people of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and are churning out 1000s of newly qualified people each year to different areas of the industry who are not equipped with all of the skills necessary to be inclusive of everyone. A lot of people take the responsibility themselves to go on to do extra courses to learn these skills but training for all Hair Textures and Skin Tones should not be seen as a speciality or add on to a main qualification, it should be included from the start of everyone’s career. A lot of Hairdressing, Barbering, Makeup and Beauty recognised qualifications do not include any training which would allow the ability to gain skills to be able to work with ALL clients. Most of the time the learners are not made aware of how much they would need these skills and are then faced with having to find out for themselves or become ignorant to the issue.
There are many many amazing teachers out there who would relish the opportunity to teach these skills under official and recognised qualifications and so it is important that training establishments and awarding bodies start to open their requirements for a qualification.
Imagine what it would be like for you to walk in to a salon, on to a TV or Film set or Fashion shoot to be told your Artist can’t do your Hair because they have never dealt with your hair type or that they don’t have foundation suitable for your skin tone because they have never been shown how but are still able to class themselves as fully qualified. Have you ever had a client tell you their experiences of having to do their own Hair and Makeup On a shoot and wondered why and what has gone so wrong to enable this to happen? Whilst this may not be the case for everyone and every area of the industry it is something that should be considered for courses that promote careers in TV, Film, Media, Prosthetics and Special Effects, Theatre, Fashion and Commercials. This is not a fight against the awarding bodies, associations and Training establishments within the Hair/Makeup/Barbering/Beauty education system, it is a plea to work together to change this issue. Now is the time to break the stigma and make Hair and Makeup available for EVERYONE.
