Save John Steinbeck's Home
Save John Steinbeck's Home
Why this petition matters
John Steinbeck, one of only 13 Americans to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, received the award in 1962 while living in Sag Harbor, NY. His modest home is now for sale. If any property in Sag Harbor and on the East End needs to be preserved, it's Steinbeck's home.
It is now possible for everyone to participate with a small but mighty donation and join the team. Would you please stand with us and donate $10, $50, or even $100 or more if you can, to make the Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat a reality, and save this international treasure? Read our latest update below and donate HERE.
Steinbeck wrote "The Winter of Our Discontent" about a fictional bay side community in his writing studio, Joyous Garde. Unlike a lot of writers in the village who keep anonymous, Steinbeck immersed himself in the community. He started the modern day Whalers' Festival, was a familar face up & down Main Street, and a friend to many.
Communities around the country have honored their great writers and preserved their homesteads: Emily Dickinson in Amherst, Ernest Hemingway in Key West, Langston Hughes in NYC, Herman Melville in Pittsfield, MA and many more.
Sag Harbor, along with town, county, state, &/or federal assistance MUST preserve this jewel in its literary crown. How many communities have had a Nobel Prize-winning author living in and integral to their life?
We are asking you to show your support for preserving Steinbeck's Sag Harbor home and creating a writer-in-residence program for future generations. Please Donate HERE. Thank you.
