Why this petition matters

The City of Knoxville has made considerable investments to promote alternative forms of transportation. Recent streetscape projects, additional greenway extensions, and the creation of the Urban Wilderness are making it more desirable to walk and ride your bike. However, safety on our streets is still a major concern for residents:

  • There is at least 1 death on Knox county roadways each week.
  • An average of 10 collisions between cars and pedestrians occur in Knoxville each month, 9 of which result in injury or death.
  • There are over 1,000 deaths on Tennessee's roadways each year.
  • Tennessee is ranked as the 12th most dangerous state in the US for pedestrians.
  • Approximately 1 in 5 of those injured or killed on our roadways is a child or a senior citizen.

Vision Zero is making our streets safer around the world. Vision Zero is a campaign with a simple goal – bring deaths and serious injuries on our roadways to zero. The campaign has had a tremendous impact over the last 5 years, decreasing fatalities 30% or more in cities across the U.S. Several candidates campaigned on this important issue during the last Knoxville city election. Now is the time to press our city to join over 40 Vision Zero cities across the U.S. who are generating grassroots solutions to end deaths and serious injuries on our roadways. We need you. With your support, we can tell our elected officials and community leaders how important these issues are, and work together to generate solutions that make our city safe for everyone.
