==================

We oppose the plan to develop large-scale solar power production on the island of Teshima of the Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. That is not to say that we are opposed to solar power itself. However, we oppose the project for three reasons. First, building in this location would take away from the area's exceptional scenic beauty. Second, it is uncertain if a business only interested in making money will be able to continue in the long term, and third, it poses a risk of causing disasters or polluting the sea by being built on unstable land.

German geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen, known for coining the term "Silk Road," saw the Seto Inland Sea for the first time while sailing from the US to China in 1868. In his "Tagebucher aus China," he communicated its beauty to the world, and also gave a warning for the future:

“With such majestic scenery, could there be anywhere in the world more beautiful than this? In the future, this place will be celebrated as one of the most charming in the world and attract many visitors ... I pray that it can remain like this forever. Its greatest enemy will be civilization and the emergence of a human desire unlike anything before.”

Then, in March of 1934, the Bisan-Seto Strait, including Teshima, was designated one of the first national parks in Japan. In other words, it was designated as a beautiful part of the natural world that Japan must preserve for the future generations.

For 42 years, Teshima has fought against the illegal dumping of industrial waste by malicious business operators only interested in turning a profit. It had received the unfortunate nickname Garbage Island. This tragic history became known to the world, but the removal of 910,000 metric tons of waste and polluted soil was eventually completed in March 2017. With this, the stigma of being Garbage Island was removed, and the first confident steps were taken as the island began to overcome this unfortunate part of its past.

Teshima is a small, remote island with a population of about 800 people. Now, thanks to the Setouchi Triennale international art festival, many people come to visit from all over the world. Teshima has become an island of art featuring locations such as the Teshima Art Museum and Les Archives du Cœur. We wish to preserve the natural state of Teshima, and hope for an island that celebrates coexistence with nature. This is where the plan to build a solar power plant has arisen. But what good is it if building a solar power plant to protect nature ends up destroying nature in the process?

It is indeed as Richthofen said: Teshima is now opening up to the world. We want to preserve the island, so that it can last for future generations. Now, the residents of the island are fighting the plans for a solar power plant together. We ask for everyone to lend us their support. Please aid us by providing your electronic signature. Raise your voice together with ours. We will present everyone's signatures to the power company, the government (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Ministry of the Environment), Kagawa Prefecture, Tonosho Town, and other agencies involved. Please work together with the residents to protect the island’s natural beauty. We need your help.
